Distillery Project (Part 0)
May 27th, 2025
Took me a little bit to get back to focusing on this blog but decided to use it as a spot to outline the progression of creating a Distillery Management Software system. It's a project I've had on my brain for years and have started and stopped it many times. My brother has been spending the past 10 years working on the craft of distilling and is on the verge of opening his own Distillery in Duluth, MN (check out Duluth Whiskey Project!). Through years of conversations with him and a desire to build something outside of the healthcare world that could possibly be a side business I have often wondered if there was a business.
I've decided to build it - at least see if it can become something. I'll initially build an MVP for what my brother would need at a minimum (basically a MN focused tax submitter). My goal with the blog is to outline my progress and all the dumb things I do as I try to see the product come together. I'll try to explain my rational around decisions and what I'm getting held up on.
The Goal
- Attempt to submit an update by the 1st of the month on what was done the previous month and what I plan on tackling the next month.
- Push to get feedback on what is being built and items that I have learned about.
- After 12 months after an actual product that my brother could use if he desired to.
- After 18 months evaluate if it's worth seeking to expand the business.
The Process (At least initially)
I am going to attempt to create a monthly goal related to the project with a focus on how Software is developed (by iterating on the product and trying to get feedback). I'll attempt to descibe the product and give updates on my thought process as I approach things and any challenges I hit.
